S56. SURAH AL – WAQIAH

NAME: The word “Al-Waqiah” meaning an event to occur(Qiyamah or Resurrection) gives its name to the Surah.

TIME OF REVELATION : It is Makkan and the subjects in it indicate that it must have been revealed in the middle period.

CENTRAL THEME : To present the events of Reward and Torment on the Day of Resurrection and to infuse its certainty.

ORDER OF THE VERSES : Ayah 1 to 6 caution about the terrible event of Qiyamah. Ayah 7 to 56 warn that on the Day of Resurrection people will be divided into three groups. Then the end of each group has been mentioned in detail. Ayah 57 to 74 present the truths and facts which create certainty about Reward and Punishment in the Hereafter. Ayah 75 to 96 are concluding Ayah of the Surah which shake the people who ignore the Holy Quran so that they may come to their senses and understand that whatever it mentions about the events of Qiyamah and Reward and Punishment is all in all Allah’s Revelation. There is no chance at all for satanic interference therein. Finally, describing man’s helplessness at the time of his death, he has been informed about this end.

56.SURATUL WAQIAH Ayah: 96

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

1. When what is to occur will occur. 1

2. There is no untruth in its occurrence. 2

3. Abaser and Exalter. 3

4. When the earth will tremble with a severe stir. 4

5. And the mountains will crumble with a crumbling.

6. So that they will become dust scattered. 5

7. And you will be divided into three groups. 6

8. So the people of the right hand,7 what are the people of the right hand!

9. And the people of the left hands,8 what are the people of the left hand!

10. And the foremost are the foremost. 9

11. They are brought nigh (their Lord)’10

1. Means Resurrection which will necessarily occur.

2. There is nothing which can either hinder Resurrection or can postpone it. Nor can this news be false. Its occurrence is a sure and certain truth.

Resurrection is not only feasible but it is going to appear before all as an event. Therefore every one should worry about his future. But the current age’s educational, cultural, economic and political system or order keep man entangled only in worldly affairs. Therefore, until the feeling of Resurrection’s Severity does not catch man’s mind his angle of thought cannot change.

3.That is: Qiyamah will raise up many and drag down many. Those who were holding a high position in the world even though they did not deserve it, will be brought down by Qiyamah. Likewise those who could not rank high in the world despite being worthy will be bestowed with highness in the Hereafter. In this way the Hour of Resurrection will bring forth a great revolution with it for human society. New measures of honour and dishonour will be established.

4. The earth-quake of Qiyamah will shake up the earth so severely that it will begin to tremble and everyone will be terrified. A picture of this restlessness has been drawn in the initial ayah of Surah Hajj. The events following the great quake have been described in Surah Zilzaal also.

5. Looking at the huge mountains, the shortsighted man thinks that this earth will remain in the same condition for ever. But Quran informs us of a great revolution which will occur on this earth. When the hour of Qiyamah arrives the mountains will become powder and will be blown with the wind like dust. The mountains will be removed so thoroughly that the earth may become like a leveled ground whereon Resurrection can be established.

6. Which will be these three groups has been narrated after this.

7. Means righteous Faithful whose worksheets (Naamae Aamaal)will be given in their right hands. For further explanation please see Surah Inshiqaq, Note: 7.

It should be noted that Quran has not clarified here as to what treatment will be given to Fasiq (sinful) Muslims, firstly because, at the time of the revelation of these ayah there was no sinful group among the followers of the Holy Prophet. Secondly wisdom and strategy demanded that, from the viewpoint of inspiration and admonition, the reward of the Believer and the punishment of the disbeliever be described face to face. The Quran has, elsewhere, mentioned the acceptance of shafaat (intercession) with certain conditions and their case is different. And no one knows, on the Day of Qiyamah, after facing how many difficulties and suffering how many torments, such people will get the chance of the said ‘shafaat’.

8. That is: the deniers and the sinners whose work-sheet will be given in their left hands.

9. means those who ranked first after accepting Faith and who remained in the fore front in offering sacrifices for their religion. They will rank first in getting Rewards. For more clarification please see Surah Taubah, Note: 180.

10. They will attain the closest nearness to Allah and the honour of such nearness will be the greatest honour.

12. In the Gardens bountiful. 11

13. The major group will be from among the former.

14. And a few from among the latter. 12

15. On jeweled thrones.13

16. Reclining on them, facing each other.14

17. There shall wait on them youthful boys who will ever remain same. 15

18. With goblets and beakers and cups of wine flowing. 16

19. that will neither cause head-ache nor suspend senses. 17

20. And fruits of their choice.18

21. And the flesh of fowls such as they desire. 19

22. And for them will be houries having beautiful eyes. 20

23. Like protected pearls. 21

24. A reward they have been working for 22

25. There they will hear no nonsense nor sinful discourse.23

26. except talks of peace and peace. 24

11. In the gardens of Paradise, which will be full of bounties, they will live luxuriously for ever.

12. During the narration of the near ones the sincere companions of the Holy Prophet were given the good tidings that a big group among the people of the first era will be ‘Muqarrabeen’ (near ones) and that there will be Muqarrabeen in the latter people too. But they will be fewer in number. Hence among the companions there were more people who held high positions consequent upon their virtuous character, their sincerity and their urge to offer sacrifice. Thereafter such people went on decreasing in later times. A hadith too supports this:

“The best people are of my time, then those who will come later, then those who will come later.”

13. These will be imperial thrones embedded with jewels.

14. ‘They will be seated in a majestic manner reclining on their thrones and face to face with one another. This gives us an idea of the well arranged gatherings of the People of paradise. Nobody will turn face from anyone and all will live a pleasant life in a friendly atmosphere.

15. For explanation please see Surah Toor, Note: 28.

16. That is: for entertaining them these youthful boys will remain present before them with jugs full of drinks which they will offer in precious cups. They will also present brimful glasses of pure wine brought from running streams.

17. For explanation please see Surah Saffaat, Note:39.

18. There will be all kinds of fruits in Jannat. They will take up the things of their choice there from. For further clarification please see Surah Toor Note: 22.

19. They will get the meat of whatever birds they desire.

20. For explanation please see Surah Toor, Note: 18.

21. Pearls not touched by anybody, very bright and glittering.

22. All this will be given to them as a reward of their deeds and when they will get the bounties of Paradise as their reward they will be extremely pleased realizing that their efforts bore the best fruits.

23. For explanation please see Surah Nabaa, Note: 22.

24. They will be offered the gift of ‘Salaam’ from every corner and whatever talks will be there, will be regarding peace and only peace. There will be no talk which may cause grief or be reprehensible. It will be a very big bliss because no one gets such atmosphere in this world.

27. And the people of the right hand, and what a grandeur of the people of the right hand. 25

28. They will be among thorn-less lotetrees.26

29. and bananas one above another. 27

30. and a shade spread out. 28

31. and water overflowing. 29

32. and fruits abundant.

33. neither ending nor limited. 30

34. and will be on coaches raised. 31

35. WE have created them (their wives) of special creation.

36. and have made them virgins. 32

37. Lovely 33 and of equal age. 34

38. for the people of the right hand. 35

39. They will be in great number from the formers.

40. and many in number from the latter (generations) too. 36

41. And the people of the left hand. What a plight of the people of the left hand!37

42. in scorching wind, boiling water.

25.The right hand is stronger then the left one comparatively. It is regarded as a sign of auspiciousness. Those who will get their record of deeds in their right hands will be very fortunate people.

26. The fruit of a lote tree having less thorns is more sweet. One important speciality of the lote fruit is that its fragrance is very sweet. And what to talk about the thorn less lote tree fruits of Paradise! This world’s fruits can give us only a faint idea thereof.

27. Banana is a sweet and tasty fruit and what to talk of the bananas of Paradise! Their being piled up one upon another will exhibit the skill of its production. They will be very pleasing to the eye.

28. We can have an idea about the length of the shade of a tree in Paradise from a hadith which says:

“In Jannat there is a tree so big that if a rider travels under its shade for a hundred years he will still be there under.” (Bukhari, Kitabut Tafseer).

29. There will be ample water in Paradise. It will go on flowing therein.

30. The availability of Heavenly fruits will never end. In this world fruits grow in their particular season. But the trees of Paradise will remain fruitful always. Their fruits will be available every moment. Moreover there will be no restrain on getting those fruits. No law will come in the way of getting them. There will be no problem of ownership also. Every fellow of Paradise will be able to get every fruit of his choice without any hindrance.

31. It will show the greatness of their honour.

32. The women of Paradise will be given most appropriate bodies. They will be made virgins even if they had children in this world.

33. They will love their husbands, will have very beautiful faces, and will be very pleasing to the eyes of their husbands.

34. For explanation see Surah Sa’ad, Note: 76.

35. These beautiful and attractive women will be for the people of the right hand. Those virtuous women who were in the wedlock of virtuous men will join their own husbands. Those men who did not have virtuous wives in this world will be wedded to other virtuous women. This is much sufficient to understand the matter. There is no need to go in deeper details.

36. The people of the right hand will be numerous from the earlier members of this Ummah. There will be many from the latter ones too. This is an indication that righteous people will continue to be born in this Ummah till Dooms Day. It should be noted that the Holy Quran has given the good tidings to the God-fearing only. Those of the right hand will only be the Godfearing.

37. The condition of those people will be very pitiable whose record of deeds will be given in their left hands.

43. and in the shade of black smoke will they be. .

44. Which will be neither cool nor useful.38.

45. They were, before this, in luxury. 39.

46. and were persisting in the great sin. 40.

47. and were saying: when we shall die and shall be reduced to dust and bones, what, shall we be raised again?41.

48. and also our forefathers? .

49. Say: Surely, those of old and those of later times, .

50. all will be gathered at the hour of the appointed day.42.

51. Then, O you erring and denying people! .

52. you will eat of the Zaqqoom-tree,43.

53. will fill your bellies with it. .

54. Then will drink boiling water over it. .

55. and will drink as the drinking of a thirsty camel. 44.

56. This will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital. 45.

57. WE have created you. Then why do you not confess? 46.

38. Usually a shade is cool but this shade will be that of black smoke which will be neither cool nor will it provide pleasure. It is mentioned in Surah Mursalat:

“A shade which will be shade less which will not protect one from the flames.” (Mursalat: 31) .

39. Since they were affluent in the world they ought to have been thankful to Allah, but they turned their wealth into a means of thanklessness. .

40. Great sin means polytheism. These people were never prepared to give up polytheism and idolatry. Rather they insisted that it was lawful and stuck to it until last. .

41. After burial in the ground the flesh of the body mixes with the earth within a few days leaving only bones. In view of this they were wondering as to how they will be made to stand up on the Dooms Day when their bodies would be no more. They had a wrong notion about Allah’s Might and were not prepared to believe what Allah Almighty was informing them through His Prophet, regarding the resurrection after death. Thus they went on committing, sins upon sins.

Two serious crimes of the people of the left hand have been mentioned here viz first atheism and polytheism and second denial of Dooms Day. .

42. The entire human race beginning with Adam up to Qiyamah will be made to rise up for resurrection. This second life will be given to them so that they may taste the fruits of their deeds in the first life. .

43. The explanation of Zaqqoom has been given in Surah Saffat, Note: 51 .

44. ‘Heem’ (very thirsty) are camels suffering from extreme and unsuitable thirst. No quantity of water can satisfy their thirst. Similar will be the plight of the people of the Hell. They will go on drinking hot water but their thirst will not be quenched. .

45. These criminals will be greeted thus and with such punishments on the Day of Resurrection. This sarcasm is to make it clear that the crimes of these people were so severe that there is no question of giving them any reward. They will have to undergo only painful punishments. .

46. When it is an undeniable fact that your creator is ONLY ONE ALLAH, then why do you not accept the Guidance sent by Him through revelation cautioning you about the Resurrection?

In ayah 57 to 71 several questions are put before the deniers of the Dooms Day so that they may reach a correct conclusion after due consideration.

58. Did you ponder, the semen you drop.

59. is it you who give it the (human) shape or it is WE who give. 47

60. WE have ordained death among you 48 and WE are not powerless.

61. to alter your appearances and transform you into a creation you know not. 49

62. You are aware of your first birth. Then why do you not accept admonition? 50

63. Have you thought about that which you sow?

64. Do you grow it or are WE the growers? 51

65. If WE wish WE may make it chaff and you may indulge in talking:

66. we have become indebted.

67. rather have been deprived totally. 52

68. Have you thought over the water you drink?

69. Have you sent it down from the cloud, or are WE the Senders? 53

70. It WE please, WE may make it bitter. Why then are you not thankful? 54

71. Have you ever pondered over the fire which you strike?

72. Have you created its tree, 55 or are WE the Creators?

47. You are merely dropping a little drop of contemptible water in the womb. Thereafter the entire process of transforming that drop, after causing it to pass through several stages, into the shape of a child and infusing life in it is very thought provoking. Is it your accomplishment or that of your LORD?

48. Death invariably overtakes every human being. It is a sure and solid proof of man’s helplessness and of Allah’s power and might.

49. The Being Who controls your life and death is also able to transform your appearance and to turn you into another species.

50. When Allah could create you for the first time how will it be impossible for Him to recreate you for the second time? If man can be created from earth once why it cannot be done for a second time again from the earth?

51. You are merely sowing the seed. Transforming it into greenery is the work of ONLY ONE GOD.

52. If WE destroy the crops you will be sorry saying we are under the burden of a great loss, rather we are totally deprived of every benefit.

53. Raining water from the clouds so that it can be drunk is the work of only ALLAH. If, in modern times, the scientific advance has enabled man to bring down some water some where from some clouds, it too is the fruit of the God-given faculty. It does not mean that man is able to raise clouds from oceans, to make them ride the winds and to scatter them in the atmosphere and cause rainfall in different regions of the earth. This arrangement is entirely out of the reach of man. The success attained by man in his efforts is just like filling a rubber balloon with air, release it in the air and then claim that he has gained control over winds!

54. The sea water is salty and bitter in taste. But when it evaporates to be transformed into clouds there are no more salty elements in it. Therefore the water raining from clouds is pure. What a great bounty it is from God. Man observes it day and night. Why then he does not thank his Lord? If Allah wishes HE can make the rain water which is lifted from sea salty and send a bitter rain. Salty and bitter are two different tastes. Lifting of salty water and sending a bitter rain?

55. In those times two trees named ‘Markh’ and ‘Ifaar’ were found in Arabia. They could create (ignite) fire by rubbing their branches together. It is only Allah’s miracle to bring out fire from green branches of trees.

73. We have made it a source of admonition 56 and a provision for travelers. 57

74. Then, (O Prophet!) recite the ‘Tasbeeh’ (praise the Name) of your Lord, the Great.58

75. No, 59 I swear by the sites of the setting of the stars.60

76. and this is a great swearing, if you know. 61

77. Verily, this is an honourable Quran. 62

78. in a Protected Book. 63

79. which none can touch except the purified. 64

80. It is a Revelation from the Lord of the worlds.

81. Then is it this discourse that you hold lightly?65

82. and make it your portion (of this bounty) that you deny it?

83. Then why cannot you (do anything) when the soul comes up to the throat?66

84. and you are, at that moment, looking.67

85. and WE are nearer to him than you, but you do not see.68

56. Fire reminds one of the Hell fire. Man must fear Allah’s wrath on seeing any fire.

57. In those days match boxes etc. were not invented for producing fire. Travelers used to create fire by rubbing the branches of the aforesaid trees for cooking and heating purposes etc. It was a great blessing for travelers. In modern times we see various kinds of appliances for obtaining fire. They too are a blessing for which we should be thankful to Allah.

58. This guidance has been given to the Holy Prophet and through him to his followers. They are being told that if people refuse to see these open truths let them remain in their condition. You busy yourselves in reciting the praise of your Lord’s holiness because HE is above every kind of defect and partnership (polytheism). Recite Tasbeeh of his Name, for example chant SUBHANAL-LAAH OR SUBHANA RABBIYAL AZEEM. It shows the healthy condition of faith. It is also the best kind of worship.

59. The word ‘Laa’ (no) which prefixes an oath indicates the refutation of a wrong thing. Here It refutes the false thinking of the disbelievers.

60. By the setting sites of stars is meant the places where they set.

61. When the stars start setting at dawn it is like an announcement of the end of the well decorated assembly in the heaven. This scene invites every owner of an observing eye to ponder. Hence it is presented here in support of monotheism and Reward and Punishment. The Quranic call is an invitation to these basic truths. Therefore it also shows its truthfulness. An oath of setting stars is taken in Surah Najm also in support of it and so also the swearing by the movement of stars, their hiding and disappearance and the breaking of dawn as a witness to the Day of Resurrection in Surah Takveer. Here this oath is described as a tremendous oath to explain that these signs in the outer space are very great proofs in support of Monotheism and Resurrection. Every one can come to the right conclusion easily by observing them. It does not require high logic. If you really have an intention to find out the truth you will surely find it in these signs. You will observe a great Divine miracle even in the setting of stars.

62. ‘Quran’ means a much read book. Being the Word of God and having its superior qualities, it is worth reading repeatedly. The Islamic Shariah (Code of Life) has provided for it by making it a must to recite some part of the Quran in every Salat, rather in every Rakaat (part) of the daily prayers. Over and above it, this book is read so widely throughout the word that no other book can compete it. The pleasant and soul-soothing spectacle of Quran recitation can be seen during the nights of the holy month of Ramdhan.

The quality ‘Kareem’ (noble) is mentioned here which means honourable as well as benefactor. Quran is a very high and authentic Word. Whatever has been stated in it has been stated from a high stage. It is glorious in every way and worthy of respect from every aspect. Moreover, it is like a flowing spring of eternal benefits. Very ungrateful are those who do not appreciate it.

63. By ‘Kitabim Maknoon’(the protected scripture) is meant the ‘Lavhe Mahfooz’ as it is mentioned in Surah Burooj:

“Nay(this is not untrue), this is a glorious Quran, (Inscribed) in a preserved tablet.” (Burooj: 21-22)

It means this book has been thoroughly protected in the heaven where no one save the angels can reach it.

64. By (clean) is meant the angels who do not have any unclean lines or impurity like sin and evil. Tabari and other commentators too have understood that’ Mutahhareen, means the angels. It has been clarified in Surah Abasa:

“It is in the leaves that are greatly honoured, Exalted and Purified, (Written) by the hands of scribes, (Who are) Honourable and faithful.” (Abasa: 13-16)

And here the aim is to explain that the imagination of the deniers regarding Quran that it is sent down by Satan is totally wrong and a big lie. The Quran is the WORD OF ALLAH and its source is LAVH-E- MAHFOOZ (THE PRESERVED TABLET) which is in the heaven. No satan can ever reach it to snatch it away or to pollute it. Only pure angels can reach there and only they can touch it. They, as per the Divine order, descend with the ayah of the Quran exactly as they are. Their chief Gabriel reveals it to the Holy Prophet. This work of bringing the Holy Quran is being done by the clean and pure angels. Hence there is no possibility of its mixing with the angels’ own words or with those of the devil or anyone else.

The main meaning of this ayah is what has been described above. But Fuqaha (religious jurists) have understood it as an argument to prohibit the touching of Quran without wazoo (ablution). In support, they also quote this hadith of Muatta

“Abdullah bin Abi Bakr bin Hazam narrates that in a letter written by the Holy Prophet to Amr bin Hazm it was mentioned that only the clean one (Tahir) should touch the Quran.”

Here it is not possible to enter into a lengthy discussion of Fiqh (religious jurisprudence).Hence we submit some points in brief

1. No order has been given in this ayah. Rather it is a statement of the fact that the Quran is being descended exactly as per the Book which is kept preserved in the heaven and which is being touched only by the pure, clean and honest angels. Neither the satans (devils) can pass by it nor their unclean hands can ever touch it. Nor they can interfere with being with ablution’. Rather it means a function of the angels. It is irrelevant to deduce such an order from this that the Quran should not be touched without performing ablution. The difference between “Tahir” and “Mutahhar” must also be kept in mind. If it were to convey that one who touches the Quran should be with ablution, the word “TAH-HEREEN” would have been used and not “MUTAHHAREEN”. Just as there is the mention of the angels’ touching the Quran so is the mention of the angels’ writing the Quran in Surah Abasa:

“(Written) by the hands of scribes, (Who) are honourable and Faithful.” (Abasa: 15-16)

Would it then be proper, on this analogy, to make it a condition that one must be Honourable and Faithful for writing any of its ayah? If such a derivation is not proper then the deduction made from the ayah mentioning “Mutah-hareen” too is improper.

2. As regards the Muatta’s hadith: “Only he who is pure should touch the Quran.” Firstly this hadith is Mursal (Awnal Ma’bood Sharah Sunan-e- Abi Dawood, Vol: 1, p: 384). Secondly “Tahir” does not necessarily mean being with ablution’. Rather it means a fellow who has cleaned the impurity of janabat(seminal discharge). This conclusion is supported also by those hadiths which, prohibit the reading of the Holy Quran by those who have not taken a bath (gusl) after indulging in sex (janabat). Though these Hadith too are not above criticism (Ibid 1 :383) and the Quran has ordered a Junubi (one who had sex) to take a bath:

“ And if you are unclean because of ‘Janabat’ (pollution), purify yourself by bathing.” (Maaidah: 6)

In view of these Quranic commandments the only thing which can be deduced from the above-quoted hadith of Muatta is that any person, after sex and any woman after menses, who has not purified himself or herself may not touch the Quran.

3. Some Fuqaha have become so much strict that, while prohibiting the touch of Quran without wazoo, they have banned to touch even those sheets of papers or those books which contain an ayah of Quran. This means without performing wazoo nobody can even write Bismillah on a letter nor can he quote any ayah therein because BISMILLAAH too is an ayah of the Quran. Similarly he cannot touch those magazines or periodicals which contain the ayah of Quran. A hadith of Bukhari refutes such strictness wherein he has quoted Ibrahim Nakhae saying that “there is no harm in writing a letter without wazoo.” (Bukhari, Kitaabul Wazoo, Baab: Qiratul Quran Ba’ad al- hadith etc.). Obviously there will be Bismillaah in a letter and so also ayah if necessary. The Holy Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) had written a letter to the Qaisar of Rome. There were some ayah of the Quran therein. Was the man, then, who carried that letter asked that it should not be touched without ablution.

4. Ibne Abbas, Sho’bi, Zahhaq, Zaid bin Ali, Muayyid Billaah, Dawood, Ibne Hazam and Hammaad bin Sulaiman are of the opinion that Quran can be touched without performing ablution. (Fiqhus Sunnah, As Saiyid Saabiq, Vol. 1.P. 57.

5. Surely it is good and auspicious to be with wuzoo while reading and studying the holy Quran, because, in a state of cleanliness man has a greater feeling of purity which also helps keeping the mind pure. But to make it Haraam (unlawful) to touch the Quran without wuzoo is nothing but severity of jurisprudence. Such strictness can only create numerous hardships for people in the current age. It is not practicable to make it compulsory to be with wuzoo for all those who purchase, sell, print, bind and carry copies of Quran from one place to another. This condition is a great hindrance in the path of Quran’s propagation. This BOOK is not meant only to be kept in beautiful covers. It is obligatory to obtain Guidance from it at every step. It is a must to spread it more and more widely. It is a fact that the facilities offered by Deen (religion) have been removed by such severity of Fiqh.

65. They do not feel its greatness. They ignore it.

66. Also ponder over your utter helplessness at the time of death.

67. The soul of the fellow is being gathered before your eyes.

68. Compared to you, God is nearer to the dying person. For explanation please see Surah Qaaf. Note:21.

86. Why then, if you are not in bondage.

87. restore that soul, if you are truthful?69

88. Then if he be of ‘Muqarrabeen’ (who has reached the position of being near Allah).70

89. then for him is comfort and fragrance and a garden bountiful. 71

90. And if he be of the people of the right hand. 72

91. then peace be to you as you are among Ashaabe Yameen (people of the right hand). 73

92. And if he be of the deniers, the erring.

93. then he will have entertainment of boiling water.

94. and his entry will be in the Hell. 74

95. This, indeed, is the Certain Truth.75

96. So, (O Prophet!) recite the ‘Tasbeeh’ of the Name of your Lord, the Great.76

69. That is: If you are not subject to or under control of your Lord then why do you not bring back the soul after death’? When it is a reality that a soul departed from the body cannot be retrieved by anybody either for himself or for anyone else, then why does he not accept the truth and reality that he is a subject of and under total control of his LORD? When he is under HIS control then HE should be worshipped and also be obeyed. Where is the ground for disbelief and disobedience and rebellion?

70. For the explanation of “Muqarrabeen” please see Note: 10 above.

71. If the dead fellow is from the Muqarrabeen then there is total relief for his soul. He smells such a pleasant fragrance which makes him fresh and happy. He is given the good tidings of the bountiful Paradise. It has also been mentioned in Surah Haa Meem Sajdah (ayah 30) that angels descend with good tidings of paradise upon those who remain steadfast.

72. People of the right hand means the common righteous people whose record of deeds will be given in their right hands.

73. If the dying man is righteous the angels give him good tidings while collecting his soul that there is peace and safety for him and that he will never face any hardship or calamity.

74. If the deceased was a denier of Tawheed (Belief in ONLY ONE GOD) and the Hereafter and was a way ward then he will be greeted with hot water and he is given the bad news that he will go to Hell.

75. That is: All the above mentioned things are totally true. There is not the least scope for doubt therein.

76. For explanation please see Note:58.

It is mentioned in a hadith that when this ayat was revealed the holy Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) said: Keep it in your Rukoo.(bowing position in salaat) and when the ayat was revealed he said: Keep it in your Sajdah (prostrating position in the prayer). (Aboo Dawood, Kitabus Salaat).

So in Rukoo we recite ( H o l y is my Lord the (Great) and we say (Holy is my Lord, the Exalted) in Sajdah as per this order of the Holy Prophet.

This also makes it clear that the recitations of the Salaat are based on the instructions and hints given by the holy prophet.
